START Auto Advance 372 Next: David O. McKay Foyer 370 Back: Mosaic Mural As you enter the interior of the foyer you will see a painted mural "Kapiolani Defies Pele" by Edward T. Grigware, which is 32 feet wide and almost 12 feet high. The painting was completed sometime between 1958 and 1960 and depicts the first Christian missionaries who arrived in Hawai'i in 1820. At first in their efforts to convert the native Hawaiians, they were hindered by the superstitions and priest craft of the ancient Gods of the islands. The painting shows Kapiolani, the daughter of the great chief Keawe-Mauhili breaking the spell of the belief in Pele the Goddess of the Volcano.
